Turnover / attrition rate

Attrition is quoted often, and defined in several different ways. The number only means something if you state the period, the headcount basis and whether involuntary exits are included.

Turnover / attrition rate

(Separations / Average headcount) × 100. Annualised if period < 1 year.

How it is calculated

1

Average headcount = (opening + closing headcount) ÷ 2.

2

Period rate = separations ÷ average headcount × 100.

3

Annualise by scaling the period rate to twelve months.

Worked example

12 separations against an average headcount of 200 over six months is a 6% period rate, or 12% annualised.

What to watch for

Frequently asked questions

What is a healthy attrition rate?

It varies enormously by sector — Indian IT services has historically run far higher than manufacturing. Track your own trend and segment it before comparing to anyone else.

Should I include retirements and terminations?

Include them in total attrition, but report voluntary attrition separately. Mixing them hides the signal you are actually looking for.
